Zane blinked in surprise. “It matters to me,” he said quietly. “I want to know. So I….” His voice trailed off and he swallowed. “So I can protect you.”
Ty sniffed. “Protect me from being afraid?”
“Protect you when you’re afraid,” Zane corrected.

This, this is the problem issue brilliance of re-reading – the feels hit on what I’d previously read as a passing comment. I read this now and think OMG Sanchez!! He was one of those bilingual agents and now……and I’m still convinced that his funeral will have happened during this books timeline (probably during the break)

Zane dragged his teeth over the tattoo. “This might be my favorite part of you.”

Ty pressed a kiss to Zane’s cheek. “Why?”

“It’s who you are.” He kissed Ty again, holding him tighter. “It’s you in meta form.”

“Zane.” Ty’s voice was harsh in his ear. “Don’t speak geek to me when you’re naked. It shatters the illusion.”

Ty smiled, eyes bright. Then his expression fell and he smacked Zane’s chest. “Why didn’t I know you can draw?”

“What? ”

“I saw your painting. And Annie said you do charcoal sketches.”

“I-”

“You are going to draw me something, and you’re going to do it tonight.”

Zane laughed. “What?”

“You should draw me a tattoo!”

Zane raised an eyebrow, arrested by the thought. He hadn’t drawn in years, hadn’t even thought of it, but the idea of using Ty’s skin as a canvas was appealing in so many ways. “I might have to do that,” he rasped.

Zane’s anger wilted, and he just looked at Ty while he stood there and ached inside. “I don’t want to hurt you”

Zane slowly nodded, waiting a few heartbeats before admitting, “I am now,” in a matching whisper. There was so much he wanted to say but didn’t dare.
